Eighth Grade

 


Advanced Art


This daily year-long course is designed to more fully develop the student in visual arts by providing experiences with the elements of design and the principles of design through a problem solving, studio approach. Students will be able to evaluate art criticism, aesthetics, and art production with an understanding of the elements of art and principles of design. Students will not only learn the traditional art curriculum for their current grade level, but how to take those skills further and to commit to a piece of artwork.

Along with gaining a deeper understanding of art history, students will have experience with the following mediums: drawing, painting (acrylic, watercolor, oil), ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, multimedia, and digital.

Enrollment in this course is by recommendation only. Students must have taken art the previous year to be considered for recommendation.

Art


2D Art

This combined 7th and 8th grade class will focus on drawing, painting, and 2D media. We will interpret the world around us by studying how it is made. Art history will be the foundation of each project, as we study certain artists and art movements. Students will also be challenged to explore how messages in art effect the viewer.


Students will be able to work at their own skill level, but will be challenged to add more meaning and purpose to projects as the semester goes on. Experienced workers will be allowed more independence as they advance through the class.

This is a one-semester course that can be taken by both 7th and 8th graders, once each year.

3D Art

This combined 7th and 8th grade class will work with 3D materials such as clay, plaster, wood, and found objects. Students will build, carve, and attach these to make meaningful works of art.

We will research how sculpture and clay have changed throughout history, and the many avenues and careers in which these techniques are used. Students will explore the difference between message-filled sculpture and handmade items that help us in everyday life. We will experiment with professional techniques that will help students develop a personal style.

Students will work at individual skill levels, and experienced workers will be allowed more independence as they advance through the class.

This is a one-semester course that can be taken by both 7th and 8th graders multiple times, once each year.

Moral

 

Chorus


The goals of middle school chorus are to develop the unique (sometimes changing) voice while making music to praise God. Other goals of the program are developing musicianship through singing, sight-reading, theory practice, and listening to, analyzing, and critiquing music. The choruses perform both on and off campus throughout the year.

Drama

 

 

English


The eighth grade English curriculum is designed to develop skills in reading, thinking, listening, speaking, and writing. Students read extensively from different genres, learn to recognize and use various literary techniques, and are challenged to look beyond the plot and obvious meaning of a work to find multiple meanings and themes.

Students are expected to contribute thoughtfully and listen carefully to class discussions, as well as to consider information from more than one perspective. Eighth grade English students write frequently for a variety of purposes and audiences and receive instruction in writing, grammar, and vocabulary to enable them to communicate more effectively.

 

 

 

Mathematics


Foundations of Algebra

This course is designed to reinforce and extend the concepts presented in Pre-Algebra. It is for eighth grade students who need additional practice with pre-algebra and basic algebra concepts before taking a formal course in Algebra I. Topics include but are not limited to integers, solving linear equations, linear functions, systems of linear equations, and operations with polynomials. Prerequisite: Students are recommended for placement by the seventh grade Pre-Algebra teacher. A graphics calculator is required for this course.

Algebra I

This course is an introduction to topics in algebra. These topics include but are not limited to linear functions, exponents, rational expressions, polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, factoring, inequalities and systems of equations and inequalities.This course demonstrates math's usefulness and encourages independent thinking. Problem solving, logical reasoning and critical thinking skills are emphasized through the use of cooperative learning and technology. Prerequisite: Students must be recommended by the seventh grade Pre-Algebra teacher and successfully complete a placement test. Students are required to have and use a graphics calculator for this course.

Advanced Algebra I

Advanced Algebra I includes the topics covered in Algebra I, as well as material and concepts that will be added as necessary to prepare students for Honors Algebra II in 9th grade. Students are expected to apply concepts throughout the course and increase critical thinking skills in preparation for honors level mathematics courses in high school.
Departmental recommendation required.

Algebra 2

This course is designed to reinforce and extend the concepts presented in Algebra I. Topics include, but are not limited to: equations and inequalities, linear relations and functions, systems of equations and inequalities, matrices, polynomials, irrational numbers and complex numbers, quadratic equations, quadratic relations and functions, polynomial functions, rational polynomial expressions, and exponential and logarithmic functions. This course demonstrates math’s usefulness and encourages independent thinking. Problem solving, logical reasoning, and critical thinking skills will be emphasized through the use of cooperative learning, manipulatives, and technology.

Physical Education

The eighth grade program builds on the fitness and health concepts initiated in the seventh grade and continues the emphasis on a lifetime of physical activity. It also reinforces each student's understanding of the rules and regulations involved in sports participation. Students participate in numerous individual and team-related activities throughout the year, including: flag football, volleyball, softball, ultimate frisbee, basketball, badminton, team handball, swimming, fitness testing, strength training, pickleball, jump rope, soccer, floor hockey, archery, and tennis.

Science


The goal of eighth grade Physical Science is to supply students with a basic knowledge of chemistry and physics. Through a variety of activities, students explore the various characteristics of elements, atoms, and chemical bonding, as well as investigating motion, physics equations, and machines.

Assessments will include projects and portfolios; the majority of the work for this course will be completed at school, for not all students own these pieces of software at home.
